Welcome Everyone!

Welcome everyone to the 2014-2015 school year! Our first day back was fantastic! Everyone seemed genuinely excited about being in room 234.

A couple of things to start out the year:

1. Artsonia permission slips are due back by this Friday!

2. If you Instagram then feel free to follow my professional art educator account @iamyourartteacher to see anything all things art plus due dates and reminders. Remember, this is my professional account NOT personal.

3. Our first project is a graffiti project where students create their front and back covers of their own sketchbook! We will then use a Japanese Side Stitch to put together our sketchbooks next week. So fun!

2013-2014 Stop Motion Animation: 1st Semester

It's the time of year again! Time for the BEST PROJECT EVERRRRRRRR! Stop motion animation is a form of animation where an inanimate object appears to be moving by using a series of photographs which is similar to a flip book. The students had to develop a story line, construct a set with characters, and then proceed with the tedious process of taking 400+ photographs to tell their story. Unfortunately with our snow days it put us behind this semester and the students had to take as many photographs as possible with the shortened about of time that we had. When finished we put our photographs together by using Windows Movie Maker in the computer lab. We put 0.250 seconds in between each photograph so when the pictures are being shown at that speed it appears that the object is moving on it's own.
To celebrate the accomplishment by all students we have an semi-annual movie premier called the Krieger Video Awards. This is a time where students can watch all the videos from all classes and vote for Best Video in their class. Among the Best Video winner in each class there is also an Overall Best Video winner.
Overall, this is an extremely time consuming and tedious project but the students always create successful movies and have something to be proud of at the end of the year. Great job by all!

Now the toughest question....which movie is your favorite????

2013 Art Show!

The art show this year was May 11th at the Miamisburg High School. All art work was displayed from grades K-12. It is always and interesting time to see how students evolve from elementary artists to advanced artists in high school. There was a great turn out from all grade levels!

Even our tape casts made quite the impact on the unknowing bystanders : )

Can you spot the figure?

Knit Picking!

Miamisburg Middle School officially got knit picked! Knit picking is a form of temporary graffiti that was born from the international sensation of yarn bombing. This year all grade levels participated by learning how to finger knit in their art classes. We asked for donated yarn, knitted sweaters, and knitted blankets and thanks to our volunteers we had a great turn out!
For those that stayed after school to help knit pick we appropriately named them, Knit Wits. The whole purpose behind knit picking is to be anonymous since it is a form of graffiti so the Knit Wits had to create their own Knit Wit name and dress up as their alter ego. Some of the names included; BeYARNce, RhiYARNa, Captain Knitters, Sir Knits A Lot and many more!
Next year we are hoping for an even larger turn out and much more yarn! This was a fantastic way to help keep our school all warm and fuzzy : )

Tape Casting!

This semester's students were able to engage in a new sculpture project! First students were introduced to the street artist, Mark Jenkins, and learned about his sculptures and how they are meant to trick the viewer into thinking they are real.
Then the students were placed into groups and they had to figure out a way to trick the viewer with their human sculptures in the school some way.
Then started the casting part of the project! Each group decided on a model and then the other group members would wrap the model in packaging tape by wrapping one layer sticky side up and then two layers sticky side down. After carefully cutting the casted body part off the model the group had to simply tape the parts back together and voila! They had a tape casted human being.
The final step of this project included the students dressing up their tape sculptures and displaying them within the school building while we critiqued them. They sure did scare some teachers!
