Pinwheels for Peace!

Tomorrow the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade art students will be participating in Pinwheels for Peace. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project that started in 2005 by two art teachers in Florida. It has now caught wind and gone global with over 4 million pinwheels spinning around the world on September 21st (International Day of Peace).

Students expressed their feelings on war, peace, tolerance, living in harmony, equality, global awareness etc. on one side of the pinwheel. On the other side the students visually expressed these feelings through drawings using a variety of medias. 

We will be displaying our pinwheels in the grass in between the sidewalk and the parking lot (by the marquee sign out front). We will be planting the pinwheels during first period and then taking them down in the evening.  Feel free to stop by the school to take a longer look at this amazing exhibition!

Constructing the Pinwheel!

Welcome to Art Class!

If you have found your way to this website....congratulations! You have successfully found this wonderful resource!

 A couple of things to remember:

Some cool things going on in the art room this year:
      1. Every year we do an amazing stop motion animation project using cameras and computers to create your own movie! This year we received a grant where we can get NEW cameras, NEW tripods, and NEW memory cards! This will make the project go smoothly and be much more successful!! YIPPIE!

      2. In previous years we have had to purchase our own sketchbooks. This year we will be evoking on a journey where we are actually creating our sketchbook using a Japanese Side Stitch book binding technique. So cool!

Doodle 4 Google!

Every year Google has a contest for students in grades K-12 to design their next "doodle". The doodle can be seen when you log onto www.google.com. The students designed a doodle for Google and answered the theme,"If I could travel in time, I'd visit..."Students focused on the Principles of Design to create an interesting composition that best follows the theme and is engaging for the viewer.

   

Clay Character Bowls!

      First period students first created a two dimensional drawing of their chosen character. Students then created a pinch pot using clay and then added appendages to the pinch pot. It is amazing to see how these simple pinch pots transformed into different characters. This was the first time most students have ever worked with clay and they all did a fabulous job!

Song Title Painting!

The fifth and sixth period students chose one song title and had to visually represent it on canvas board using acrylic paints. The challenge was using images that "read" to the viewer. When done correctly the viewer should be able to look at the painting and know the song title immediately. Try to guess the song titles for each painting! The answers are listed at the bottom.

Focus Painting!

For this painting project, the third and fourth period students looked at an out of focus upside-down artwork and painted what they saw.  Each day the painting got more in focus and at the end of the week, the students saw the source painting clear and right side-up for the first time! It was a big surprise when students discovered that the image was upside the entire time!

 

Students did an amazing job mixing colors, as they were only given Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, and White to create all the vivid colors in this painting.

The original art work was made by André Derain: Pont de Charing Cross, London, in 1906. Try to guess which image is the original!

Cartoon Comic Books!

Students created an original comic character with personality traits and an optional side kick. Students created a comic book with a page for the front view and side view of the characters, a page for the comic strip, a page for the background history of the character, and a comic book cover with a price tag and bar code. To complete the book the students created a Chevron Lace Pattern stitch to bind the book together. This was a large project and the students rose to the occasion!
